NYCFC’s Malachi Jones has surgery for broken leg

New York City FC forward Malachi Jones is recovering from surgery to repair his broken right leg.

The rookie had an operation Saturday for a fractured tibia and fibula, an injury sustained during Friday’s 4-2 win against Orlando City SC.

“On behalf of everyone at the club, I’d like to wish Malachi the best during his recovery. While we’re naturally disappointed to lose a player of his quality, the overriding focus is ensuring that Malachi returns to full health,” NYCFC sporting director David Lee said in a news release Monday.

“Malachi is a special player who has made a big impact this season and has a bright future ahead of him. We look forward to welcoming him back to the group after his rehab.”

Jones, 20, was the No. 8 overall pick in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft.

The Sierra Leone native tallied one goal and three assists in 14 matches (four starts) this season.
